To ensure that the festivities are safe, here are some useful holiday season fire safety tips

Cooking and Baking

Be sure to take precautions against kitchen fires when you’re cooking and baking. That includes keeping children and flammable items such as grocery bags and kitchen towels away from the stove and oven. Clean up greasy spills as you go to remove another fire hazard. 

Fireplaces

Be sure to keep “fuel” – from wrapping paper to rugs to clothing – at least three feet away from the flames. Use a fire screen to keep embers and logs from escaping. Lastly, make sure all embers are fully extinguished before you turn in for the night.

Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. 

Test smoke alarms every month. If they’re not working, change the batteries.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Half of home fire deaths happen between 11 p.m and 7 a.m.. when most people are asleep. 

• For the best protection, install interconnected smoke alarms in your home. When one sounds, they all sounds. 
• Install smoke alarms in every bedroom. Outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including basement. Larger homes may need more alarms. 

Test alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button. Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or if they do not sound when tested. Some people specially children and older adults, may need to help to wake up. Make sure someone will wake them if the smoke alarm sounds.

When the smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside. Go to your outside meeting place. 

Call the fire department from a cellphone or a neighbors phone. Stay outside until the fire department says its safe to go back inside.

What You Can Do Until Help Arrives

Do:

• Shut off the source of water if possible or contact a qualified party to stop the water source. 
• Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building when access to the power distribution panel is safe from electrical shock. 
• Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting. 
• Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletops items. 
• Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushion for even drying. 

Do not do:

• Enter room with standing water where electrical shock hazards may exist.

After a wild post-Christmas storm in Southern California this week brought heavy downpours and low-elevation snow to many areas, another storm could bring similar conditions from late Sunday through Monday.

This most recent storm even spawned a weak tornado in Ventura County, California.

This morning a storm survey for possible tornado damage at Ventura Harbor . Accuweather confirmed that a narrow EF0 tornado touched down near the Santa Clara River and moved less than 1 mi NNW across the harbor. Damage was limited to trees, roof tiles, and canopies.

The most recent fire is the Cave fire, which started on Nov.25. According to Los Angeles Times it is 90% contained and has burned 3,126 acres so far.  

The largest active fire is the South fire, which has burned 5,332 acres so far. It started Sep 5, and its 100% contained.

For most jobs in-the-home jobs, all you’ll need to do is switch off an indoor supply valve.

1. Identify the main shut off valve. This is usually a brass valve that has a round handle. In most homes, it is located near the main water pipe leading into your home.
2. Shut the valve by turning it clockwise. This will cut off the stream of water flowing into your home. If the valve is stiff, wear a glove while closing it to protect your hand as you apply some elbow grease. After that, all appliances that use water will no longer work until the water is turned back on.
3. Turn on all of the faucets to flush the remaining water in the system. Run your sinks, baths, and showers until the water stops flowing. When water’s been bled from the lines completely, turn all of the faucets off.

Mold needs these conditions before it can begin to grow in a home:

Moisture is really the key cause of mold growth since the other conditions on the list are always going to be present in homes.

The difference between whether mold grows in your home or not comes down to whether you have a moisture problem.

Humidity Causes Mold

If the weather's been very humid for a few days in a row you might notice mold starting to grow in your home. When it rains for several days it's common to see mold start to grow on walls, benches and other surfaces because of the wet air.

Also when moisture inside your house evaporates into the air it increases the humidity indoors. If your home isn't well ventilated then the humidity will stay high for a long time.

Drying clothes indoors on clothes lines or stands is a common culprit when it comes to causes of indoor humidity problems. The household HVAC system can also create humidity troubles while it artificially heats or cools the air.

Sometimes people use humidifiers in their homes. But there are molds that only need the humidity level to be higher than 55% to start growing. So if you need to use a humidifier in your home make sure to keep the humidity below 55%.

Not only does high humidity feed mold, but it means that puddles of water and damp materials in the home take longer to dry out. These wet surfaces can in turn create mold growth of their own.

Leaking Pipes Cause Mold

Water leaks from pipes are a common cause of mold growth. The worst leaks are the ones that go undetected because they are hidden out of view, like inside a wall. By the time you discover these leaks mold has usually started to grow already.

Leaks in Roof Cause Mold

Like some leaking pipes, a roof that leaks into the attic might not be discovered until it's already led to mold growth.

The best thing to do is to check the attic regularly for leaks and keep an eye on the ceiling below the attic. If you notice any signs of water damage on the ceiling or any mold that has grown through then you probably have a leaking roof.

Condensation Causes Mold

Cold surfaces can create condensation in your home. Condensation collects on cold metal pipes as well as on cold concrete floors, even if there is carpet over the top, and on walls. Places like these where condensation occurs are prime spots for mold growth.

Poor Ventilation Causes Mold

If your home is poorly ventilated it can create pockets of stagnant moist air which mold thrives in. Steam and water evaporating into the air creates humidity inside which then needs to be circulated outdoors through windows to keep the moisture level balanced.

Poor ventilation also means wet surfaces dry out more slowly. Ventilation is especially important in rooms such as the bathroom and the kitchen where there is a lot of steam.

Home fires are preventable! The following are simple steps to prevent a tragedy. 

Cooking

Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time turn off the stove. 

Keep children away from cooking areas by enforcing a " kid free zone" of 3 feet around the stove.

Position barbecues grills at least 10 feet away from siding and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. 

Smoking

Smoke outside and completely stub out butts in an ashtray or a can filled with sand. 

Soak cigarette butts and ashes in water before throwing them away. 

Never smoke in a home where oxygen is used, even if it is turn off. 

Be alert! don't smoke in bed! If you are sleepy, have been drinking, or have taken medicine that makes you drowsy. 

Electrical and Appliance Safety

Frayed wires can cause fires. Replace all worn, old or damaged appliance cords immediately and do not run cords under rugs or furniture. 

If an appliance has a three prong plug, use it only in three slot outlet. Never force it into a two slot outlet or extension cord. 

Immediately shut off, then professionally replace, light switches that are hot to the touch and lights that flicker. 

Fireplaces and Woodstove 

Inspect and clean woodstove pipes and chimneys annually and check monthly for damage or obstructions. 

Use a fireplace screen heavy enough to stop rolling logs and big enough to cover the entire opening of the fireplace to catch flying sparks. 

Make sure the fire is completely out before leaving the house or going to bed.

If you are insured, contact your insurance company for detailed instructions on protecting the property, conducting inventory and contacting fire damage restoration companies. If you are not insured, try contacting private organizations for aid and assistance. 

Check with the fire department to make sure your residence is safe to enter. Be watchful of any structural damage cause by fire.

The fire department should see that utilities are either safe to use or are disconnected before they leave the site. 

Conduct an inventory of damaged property and items. Do not throw away any damage goods until after and inventory is made. 

Try to locate valuable documents and records. Refer to information on contacts and replacement process inside brochure. 

Begin saving receipts for any money you spend related to fire loss. The receipts may be needed later by the insurance company and for verifying losses claimed on income tax.

Perform only when the structure has been cleared as safe

Take the greatest caution while entering your home, and wear sturdy shoes and protective clothing when dealing with flooded areas. Wear protective clothing at all times.

•   Take photos or video to record conditions of collections and structure. Make sure images clearly record damage.
•   Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting.
•   Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.
•   Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying.
•   Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
•   Remove any paintings, art objects, documents and other sensitive materials to a safe, dry place.
•   Place fans at 45-degree angles to walls and move large furniture away from walls to create the best air circulation
•   Appoint a media liaison to report conditions and need for help/volunteers. You may have to limit access to collections.
•   Do not enter rooms with standing water where electrical shock hazards may exist.
•   Do not attempt to operate any electrical equipment while standing in wet or damp locations.
•   Do not leave books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors to cause staining.
•   Do not leave Oriental rugs or other colored rugs on wet wall-to-wall carpets to cause staining.
•   Do not use TVs or other appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors.
•   Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet or enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.
•   Do not turn on heat unless required for human comfort.
•   Do not move objects or collections without documenting their condition.
•   Throw away all foods – even canned goods – that have come into contact with flood waters.
•   If your home has a crawlspace, be aware excess moisture in this area can often foster mold growth.
